If you would like to learn more about using our online classroom and see a demonstration, we are running a daily online seminar showing you how it works and answering any questions you may have. You can join it at 2pm any day (Monday - Friday) using the following link:
Meeting ID: 990-895-488
The seminar takes place on Zoom, for more information on how to access Zoom, please read this FAQ: https://support.tutorful.co.uk/hc/en-us/articles/360012027780-For-Tutors-How-do-I-join-my-Tutorful-seminar-
We very strongly recommend trialling the Online Classroom before giving your first online lesson to make sure you are familiar with how it all works. Experiencing the classroom first-hand and experimenting with all the different features will ensure you are properly prepared when you come to teach your first student! To access the demo version of the Online Classroom, simply select "Demo Online Classroom" from the drop-down underneath your name in the top right of the website, or from your ‘Teaching preferences’.
Before entering the classroom, we would thoroughly recommend testing your browser to ensure that you are all set up for the classroom to run smoothly! This will take you through an internet speed test, a test to ensure your camera and microphone are allowed and functioning correctly, and to ensure that you will be able to hear the student when it comes to your teaching a real lesson with a real student.
Entering the classroom
Once you have entered the classroom, you will see a page looking something like this - if your camera and microphone do not appear to be working, please ensure that your browser settings are set to allow for both, and refresh the page.
Found at the top-right corner of the classroom, there are a number of buttons you can use to make changes to your lesson! To make it a little easier to know which options you would like to use, feel free to refer to the below explanations:
The Timer allows you to see how much of your session there is to go, and extend the session by 30 minutes if you think you might run out of time! Extending the session does not automatically charge your student - if you have a full extra half hour that you wish to be paid for, please ensure you have discussed this with your student prior to extending this and contact our support team to get this extra time booked in on the system.
Wanting to ask your students some questions to make sure they were paying attention? Create a multiple choice poll to make them think about what they’ve learned - you can create as many as you would like, and you will be able to view their answer and publish the results for discussion.
If you don’t think you need to use the whiteboard, that is not a problem! You can change the layout of the classroom to ensure that it’s set up in a style that works for you. This is particularly useful if your lesson style doesn’t necessarily involve sharing documents on the whiteboard, as one of the options allows you to have your video as the full screen!
If you don’t want to upload documents into the classroom, you have the option of sharing your screen with your student. You will be prompted to install a browser extension the first time you wish to use this - for more information, please visit our FAQ which goes through how this works - How do I share my screen?
This icon shows you when the student has entered the online classroom and gives you the power to allow the student’s webcam and microphone into the classroom. If you cannot see or hear your student, it’s always worth checking here to ensure that they are present in the classroom and that the camera and microphone icons are both green! If they are red you can click on these to allow the student from your end, and if they are grey then it is an issue on the student’s end which they will need to resolve.
The online whiteboard is a fantastic interactive tool which you can use to enhance your lessons. By clicking on the ‘New’ button at the top of the blank white screen, you can use a variety of features to upload documents and images for you to share with your student. For help with using the whiteboard features, please feel free to look through our FAQ - How do I share a document?
