New Legislation in the UK Requiring Tutors to Provide a Tax Identification Number (TIN)
In response to new legislation that affects tutors working in the UK, there will now be a requirement for tutors to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) or National Insurance (NI) number when engaging with educational institutions, agencies, or private clients. This legislation aims to improve tax compliance and ensure that all self-employed workers, including tutors, are contributing accurately to national revenue.
Here are answers to some common questions about this new requirement:
1. What is a Tax Identification Number (TIN)?
A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique identifier used by tax authorities to track an individual's tax obligations. In the UK, the TIN is usually your National Insurance (NI) number. It is used by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to record your income, tax, and National Insurance contributions.
2. Why is this legislation being introduced?
The UK government has introduced this legislation to ensure that all individuals working in self-employed roles, including tutors, are properly identified and their tax contributions are accurately tracked. This helps prevent tax evasion and ensures that all workers are complying with the relevant tax laws.
3. How does this impact me if I am a self-employed tutor?
If you are self-employed as a tutor, you will need to provide your Tax Identification Number (TIN) or National Insurance number to any clients, educational institutions, or agencies that require it for tax purposes. This will allow them to ensure they are paying you correctly and will assist with reporting income to HMRC. If you're not already registered with HMRC as self-employed, you will also need to do so.
4. How do I provide you with the Tax ID?
You can do that on your Tutorful app, by going to more and clicking settings.
There, you will be able to see the National Insurance number section. Click that, and that will open a form to fill out.
You can also add this on the web by going to your photo on top -> account settings -> National Insurance number
4. What will happen if I don’t provide the National Insurance Number?
If you do not provide the National Insurance Number, we will temporarily suspend your account to comply with HMRC regulations. Once you provide it, we will reactivate your account.
5. What will happen after I have provided my details?
We will pass your earnings details onto HMRC as per the new legislation. You will be able to see this information on your dashboard.
